Galway is set to host a major housing summit this December, addressing one of the most urgent issues facing the region — the growing housing crisis and lack of affordable homes.
The event will take place over two days, on Thursday, December 11 and Friday, December 12, across two Galway City venues: Westside Community Centre and Knocknacarra Community Centre.
Organised by Midlands North West MEP Ciaran Mullooly with support from the European Parliament’s Renew Europe group, the summit will feature expert panels, practical advice sessions, and community engagement aimed at improving access to housing in Galway.
Thursday, December 11 – Information Session for First-Time Buyers and Homeowners
Time: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Venue: Westside Community Centre, Seamus Quirke Road, Galway (Eircode: H91 R853)
This evening session will offer practical, on-the-ground support for individuals and families seeking access to the housing market.
Highlights include:
- Guidance for first-time home buyers on how to begin the process
- Information on available housing schemes, adaptation and retrofit grants
- Financial advice from representatives of the Irish League of Credit Unions
- Personal stories from Galway residents who have recently purchased homes
- One-on-one engagement with trained staff and housing professionals
This event is open to all and designed as an informal drop-in session. Attendees can speak directly with experts, ask questions, and gather the information they need to take the next step toward securing a home.
Friday, December 12 – EU Housing Strategy Conference
Time: From 9:30 am
Venue: Knocknacarra Community Centre, Cappagh Road
The second day of the summit will shift to a policy and strategy focus, bringing together key stakeholders in the housing sector to explore long-term solutions for Galway.
The conference will feature:
- Panel discussions with national and EU housing policy experts
- Workshops exploring funding models, construction challenges, and social housing strategies
- Community feedback and collaborative problem-solving
- A forward-looking action plan to address Galway’s housing shortage
This session is particularly relevant to policymakers, community leaders, housing advocates, and citizens concerned about the future of housing in Galway.
