Will Perrett (DAS Richardsons) has won stage 2 of Rás Tailteann on a day when the field exploded during 170.9km of very tough racing from Charlestown into Clifden, Co Galway. Yellow jersey Tim Shoreman (Wheelbase-Cabtech-Castelli) missed the main group, though Irish rider Odhrán Doogan (Cycling Ulster), after a prolonged hard chase by his small group, caught the main bunch to finish 3rd behind Perrett. 21-year-old Doogan is now the new leader of the race and has deservedly taken the most coveted yellow jersey in Irish cycling.
Roscommon’s Daire Feeley produced a strong showing to finish 4th in today’s stage, leaving the Burren CC rider sixth overall in the General Classification, just 10 seconds behind leader Odhran Doogan. Feeley also sits in third place for the Dermot Dignam County Rider award, a new prize that will be presented for the first time on Sunday. The trophy will honour the highest placed rider competing for any of Ireland’s county teams.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 will commence in Cong. After setting off from Cong, the riders will take in scenery along the Wild Atlantic Way before they face the fast finish towards Miltown Malbay in County Clare.
