Tailteann Games
Galway athletes were well represented at the Interprovincial Tailteann Games held in SETU, Carlow last weekend, with several qualifying for the upcoming International Schools event in England. Daniel Sangodele of the Bish and West Coast AC was a standout performer in winning the Triple Jump with a huge leap of 12.68 metres, earning an international spot in the process. Michelle Nnadi, also of the West Coast, won the Silver medal in the 100m event in a time of 12.10. Also competing well for West Coast were Isobel Kelly in Discus, Caleb Ike in Shot and Princess Ehis in the Relay.
Tuam's Rachel Treacy (pictured) continues to impress, with a dominant victory in the Girls U17 80m Hurdles to secure herself selection for the Irish Schools team in Derby, England, next month. Taillte O’Callaghan from Tuam put in a fantastic performance in the 3000m Race Walk, finishing in 6th, as did sisters Rebecca Moynihan of HRC Mountbellew in the High Jump and Javelin respectively.
South Galway duo Luke Walsh and Ciaran Considine were 8th and 9th in the Boys 3000m in a stacked field. GCH fielded several athletes, including relay duo Jennifer McCarthy & Lauren Ward, who provided half the Connacht 4x300m Relay; Adill Prochownik Mohamed 5th in the 400m Hurdles; Katie O'Haire was 6th in 11.67s over 100m; Lauren Ward was 7th over 300m; Jennifer McCarthy 10th in the 800m; and Kevin Sangodele jumped 11.75m in the Triple Jump, while Mahmoud Diarrasouba was 7th in the 200m.
National Children’s Games
The National Children's Games U9-12 were held in Tullamore last weekend, with plenty of silverware coming West after a great day of action. GCH Juvenile athletes excelled, with a superb team gold for the Girls Under 12 relay squad a highlight. The winning squad comprised Katie McGlynn, Elliana Magnetti, Thea Lynch, Maneli Fazaeli and Matilda McGlynn. Amy Devitt's 9.87s time in the U9 60m made her Ireland's fastest, and the quickest in GCH history. Maneli Fazaeli broke the GCH U12 60m record when racing to an emphatic win in her heat with 8.46s. and then ran an almost identical 8.48s to win the final decisively for another club gold. GCH also secured medals in the Under 11 Girls Long Jump via Zofia Clifford and Rachel Fennessy, in the U10 10 Boys 60m via James Langan and Sam Silke, and the U11 Boys 60m by Dylan Devitt & Fiachra Hughes.
Castlegar AC’s youngest stars put on a phenomenal display at the All-Ireland Outdoor Championships, bringing home gold in the U10 Girls 60m Sprint, via Amelia Farragher and Hana Faraj Gheziel, who delivered dominant performances in the sprints. Castlegar also secured a Bronze Medal in the U9 Boys 60m Sprint via • Mason Calvey and Liam Garvey.
East Galway AC duo Fiachra Barrett and Cillian Carrigy were outstanding as they became the U10 national champions at 60m and 500m, both running personal bests in both races in the process. South Galway AC claimed All Ireland Silver and Bronze in the U9 Boys, with silver in the U9 4x100m relay and bronze in the 300m pairs. The relay team included Daithí Lucey, Ryan O'Reilly, Mark Monaghan and Colin McTigue. Daithí Lucey and Ryan O'Reilly were also the U9 pair that won bronze in the 300m
Galway Junior/Senior/Masters Championships.
The County adult Track and field competition will take place at the University of Galway Sports Grounds in Dangan on Sunday, 13th July, starting at 10 am. Events are: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, hurdles (sprint and long), shot, javelin, WFD, long jump, high jump, triple jump.
