Castlegar AC hosted Day One of the Galway Cross Country event last Saturday, along with the Galway Novice Men’s and Women’s Championships in Galway Racecourse. First home in the Galway championships at Novice Men’s level was Fergus Kelly of Craughwell AC, with Marie Sheil of GCH winning the Ladies race. GCH claimed team gold via Shiel, Bridget Jacobsen, Deirdre Moran and Dee McCrae. The combined U16/18 race was a competitive one, with Luke Walsh of South Galway AC pulling away from Oisin Maher of GCH in the U18s after a great battle. David Frazer of Craughwell AC won the U16 Boys. In the Girls' races, Siun Ni Chonaill of Castlegar AC won the U16 title, with Claudia Coyle of South Galway AC claiming U18 gold.
At U14 level, there were wins for Elise Day of Clare River Harriers and Calum Deeth of Castlegar AC. In the U12s, Darragh Steede raced to gold for Tuam AC in the Boys event, while Caitlin Mulkerrins won out in the U12 Girls event. The U10s events saw the biggest fields of the day, and wins for Katie Considine of Craughwell AC and Ben o Connor of South Galway AC
The first day of the Galway Primary Schools Cross Country Championships was held on Tuesday, 30th September in the Galway Racecourse. 2,400 athletes across almost all Galway Primary Schools in the city and county descended on the iconic venue, and across 12 races, a huge sense of excitement and achievement was in the air. The top 30 in each race and the top 5 teams now progress to the Galway Finals on 7th October next in Nolan Park, Renmore. All qualifiers are listed on www.popupraces.ie, and schools will also be notified. Organisers would like to thank Castlegar AC and Galway Racecourse for facilitating the event.
Loughrea AC 10k
The Grey Lake 10k Road Race, hosted by Loughrea AC, was held last Sunday, 28th September in Loughrea. The race winner was Damien Carter in a super time of 33.58 on a hilly course, second was Kieran McClearn, with Liam Chalkley third. First lady home was Triona Kinane in 44.43, ahead of Linda Cunningham and Laura Porter
Road Racing
The Galway Bay series of races takes place in Salthill in the city this weekend. The Marathon starts at 8.30 am, the Half Marathon at 9.30 am, and the 10k at 11.30 am. Around 4,000 athletes are expected to take part across the three races.
