As O’Meara’s SuperValu Portumna marks 45 years at the heart of the local community, this milestone offers a moment to reflect on an extraordinary journey of family leadership, innovation and service.
Central to the SuperValu Portumna legacy is the late Donie and Marie O’Meara, visionaries in Irish retail whose commitment to customers, colleagues and community shaped the store for decades. Donie's passing in February 2023 was deeply felt across Portumna, reflected in the store’s closure as a mark of respect. Today, his daughter and Managing Director, Yvonne O’Meara, proudly carries forward his values.
In 2022, the store underwent a major €1.2 million investment, transforming it into a state-of-the-art retail experience. The investment expanded its offering with a new Frank & Honest café, Moo’d ice cream, a full in-store bakery, handmade donuts, an upgraded hot food counter, a new Happy Pear range, and dedicated value, seasonal and own-brand spaces. The upgrade also created new roles across the chef, bakery and barista teams, continuing a tradition that has seen more than 1,500 local people start their working lives in O’Meara’s SuperValu.
Sustainability has become a defining pillar of the store’s future. The 2022 revamp included €700,000 in environmental upgrades, including energy-efficient refrigeration that cut electricity usage by up to 75%. Building on this, 2024 saw a further €100,000 investment, helping the store achieve an impressive 45% reduction in carbon emissions. The installation of 382 solar panels, enough to power 77 homes annually, underscores its commitment to long-term climate action.
The total investment into the store is €2.5 million.
Through all its growth, O’Meara’s SuperValu remains deeply rooted in the community, supporting local schools, sporting clubs, TidyTowns, Cancer Care West and numerous local initiatives.
Forty-five years on, O’Meara’s SuperValu stands proudly as a symbol of retail excellence, sustainability and unwavering community spirit.
