Water Safety Ireland and the Galway City Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP), will host a special Safety Event at the Spanish Arch & Claddagh Watch Base, highlighting the importance of water safety ahead of World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25. Galway City will host a large community safety event on World Drowning Prevention Day, taking place on July 24th at Spanish Arch and the Claddagh Watch Base on Flood Street. The day will feature live coverage with Ronan Lardner on The Live Wire, alongside expert water-safety talks and a special property-marking initiative supported by An Garda Síochána and the Galway City Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP).
Raising Awareness: “Anyone Can Drown, No One Should”
The event brings together key organisations dedicated to keeping people safe on and around the water, reinforcing the message that drowning is preventable through education, awareness and responsible behaviour.
On Friday July 24, the day's activities will begin on Galway Talks with John Morley, where a representative from Water Safety Ireland will share practical advice and essential water safety tips. With Galway's beaches, rivers and waterways attracting large numbers of families and visitors during the summer
From 12 Ronan Lardner will speak with representatives from the Galway City Local Community Safety Partnership, the RNLI, An Garda Síochána, Galway Fire Service, Claddagh Watch and the Irish Coast Guard. Each organisation will discuss its role in promoting water safety, responding to emergencies and working together to help prevent accidental drownings.
As part of the day, An Garda Síochána, supported by the Galway City LCSP, will host a free property marking event from 11.00am to 3.00pm at the Claddagh Watch base on Flood Street. Members of the public are encouraged to bring valuable items such as bicycles and tools for property marking, helping to deter theft and assist in the recovery of stolen property.
This year marks the fifth consecutive year that the Galway business community has supported this important community initiative, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to public safety and community wellbeing.
Adding to the day's activities, Tempo Antiques has generously sponsored three €50 gift vouchers, which will be awarded as competition prizes during the broadcast. Water Safety Ireland is also expected to provide a selection of water safety goody bags for attendees.
The event is fully supported by Water Safety Ireland, whose ongoing mission is to reduce the number of drownings and water-related incidents through education, training and public awareness.
