Athenry Golf Club proudly hosted the annual Watchman Cup, an 18-hole Stableford Open competition fur under-18 girls with a WHS handicap of 40 or below, on Thursday, 21st August.
The event brought together a strong field of young golfers who travelled from many different clubs across the region to compete.
The Watchman Cup has become a highlight in the junior golf calendar, offering a platform for the next generation of female golfers to demonstrate their skills in a competitive and supportive environment.
In attendance at the event was President of Golf Ireland, Mr Michael Evans. Mr Evans said that he “was hugely encouraged by the participation and activity of the Junior Girls at Athenry Golf Club which is supported by the excellent practice facilities available at the club as well as the coaching available from PGA professionals.”
Mr Evans said that he “would ask all Junior Golfers to introduce a friend to the game” and quoted Ben Hogan who said that “Golf is a game of lasting friendships”.
This year’s Watchman Cup Winner was Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick from Athenry Golf Club, who delivered an outstanding performance to secure the prestigious title.
In addition to the overall winner, the following prizes were also awarded on the day:
2nd place: Leah O’Connor, Roscommon Golf Club
Gross: Kara O’Neill, Athenry Golf Club
3rd place (B9): Emma Canavan, Athenry Golf Club
Bonus: Tara McNabola, Loughrea Golf Club
Speaking at the event, Marie-Anne Shivnan, Girls Junior Convenor of Athenry Golf Club commented:
