Martin White from Ballybrit has won a bronze medal with Ireland’s Over 60’s Masters Hockey team at the European Masters Hockey Tournament held in Nottingham Hockey Centre from 7 – 17th August.
White is goalkeeping coach for Galway Hockey Club and for the Connacht under-18’s. The Connacht Masters Hockey squad was also represented on the Over-60’s team by London-based Aidan O’Malley.
Also from Galway at the European 2025 finals were Neil Kearns from Dangan and Dermot Nolan of Menlo. Kearns was the midfield dynamo in Ireland’s Over-55 A team. Nolan was Team Manager of Ireland’s Over-55 B team and led them to a creditable 4th place in their competition. His Over-55 B team also featured Connacht Masters goalkeeper, Roscommon-based Garret McDermott.
Ireland’s over-60’s defeated Germany 2-1 and Wales 2-1 in their group stage, and lost to Netherlands 0-2 and England 1-4. This set up a semifinal against England, which was a closer affair, but Ireland lost 0-2. England went on to win the tournament, beating Netherlands in the final.
The men in green then defeated Germany again in the 3rd Place Playoff match, this time running out convincing winners by 3-0.
