Galway booked their place in the Connacht Senior Football Final in two weeks time after a hard fought five point victory over Leitrim in Carrick on Shannon on Saturday afternoon (25th April).
Leitrim held their own throughout the contest, and it took 7 minutes for the first score of the game, when John Daly pointed from play. At half time Padraig Joyce's side led by 0-11 to 0-4 and Cillian McDaid stretched it further immediately after the restart.
But a two pointer from Barry McNulty and a black card for Galway's Conor Flaherty opened the door for the hosts. The gap was three when Oisin McGloughlin goaled from play on 47 minutes but a black card of their own for Mark Diffley saw the Leitrim task become even more difficult.
Dylan McHugh looked to have put the game to bed with nine to play after his goal was set up by Damien Comer. A second goal for the hosts by substitute Jack Kelly, a point from a 45 by Killian Gaffey and a two pointer by Paul Honeyman had it 1-17 to 2-11 late on. But Galway's experience showed, and points from Shane Walsh and Rob Finnerty ensured they did not fall victim to a major shock, and advance to the Connacht Senior Football Final against Mayo or Roscommon in two weeks time.
