Irish Schools Track and Field Championships
History was made last weekend at the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore, as Athenry’s up-and-coming talent Sean Doggett, running for his school Coláiste an Eachréidh, smashed Brian Gregan’s schools record over 400m, to win the Senior Boys 400m crown in a superb time of 47.22
It was one of a host of medals for Galway athletes over the two days of competition
West Coast AC athletes delivered an amazing 11 medals across their schools - with 2 individual golds, 2 silver, 2 bronze and relay gold - Angela Cielecka was crowned Intermediate girls 100m Champion for Dominican College Taylors Hill Galway clocking 11.99, and gold also went to Daniel Sangodele, the Intermediate Triple jump Champion for St. Josephs College Galway
Taylors Hill girls won Intermediate relay gold with the squad of Michelle Nnadi, Princess Ehis, Angela Cielecka, Praise Limbila and Jennifer McCarthy
Lemar Lucciano won silver over the Senior 100m winner for Coláiste Muire Mathair Galway in 10.89, as did Michelle Nnadi in the Junior 100m for Dominican College Taylors Hill Galway. Lucciano and Nnadi also both later claimed bronze in the Senior 200m and Junior 200m, respectively.
Seamount Kinvara secured medals via the talented Orlaith Mannion, who raced to gold in the Senior Girls 100 Hurdles, as did Claudia Coyle in the U16 Girls Mile. Ciarán Kelleher also excelled as he won Silver in the Intermediate Boys 2,000m walk
Conor Penney led the way with another record-shattering 2.05m clearance in the Intermediate Boys High Jump to take yet another Irish title while representing his school, Calasanctius Oranmore.
Darragh Kelly (Clarin College) and Isabel Schukat (Pres Athenry) were also in electric form in the Senior Boys and Girls High Jump. Kelly put in a string of super jumps over 1.75, 1.80 and 1.85m to take the silver medal, with Schukat winning bronze for her school
Craughwell’s hurdlers were also in fantastic form with Lauren Kilduff (Gort CS) and Emma O’Donovan (St Brigid’s Loughrea) racing to silver and bronze in the Senior Girls 400m Hurdles in 61.54 and 62.70 in windy conditions.
Darragh Fahy for St Brigid’s Loughrea struck gold in the Senior Boys Triple Jump and later claimed silver in the Senior Long Jump. Ben Naughton, also for St Brigid’s put in a great last lap to win Junior Boys silver over 1500m
Matthew Newell and Hazel Dinkin both secured silver medals in the colours of Coláiste Bhaile Chlair, Newell in the Senior Walk and Dinkin in the Junior Girls event. Cliodhna Ni Chonaill, representing Coláiste na Coirib,e claimed the Bronze medal in the hotly contested Intermediate Girls 2K Race-walk
Rachel Treacy for High Cross College, Tuam, raced to joint 1st in the Junior Girls 75m hurdle with a PB of 11.18. The High Cross senior relay team (Myah Gallagher, Aine Maguire, Aoibheann Redington and Enya Mitchell) came in 3rd place overall. Also, for High Cross Tuam, there was gold for Aoibheann O Malley in the Junior High Jump. Danielle Moynihan of Holy Rosary College, Mountbellew, was superb, clocking 24.47 for Silver in the Senior Girls 200m event.
Holly Shaughnessy of Pres Athenry won bronze in the Senior Girls 3k walk
Tom McHugh of GCH and Cistercian Roscrea won a superb bronze medal for Senior Boys Discus at the Irish Schools Finals in Tullamore. His best throw of 41.12m was only passed for silver in the final round.
Overall, a hugely successful event for Galway athletes, with many more athletes competing in total across all events
Connacht Track and Field championships
More than 1,000 young athletes in the U9, 10, 11, and 12-13 age groups will participate in the Connacht Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Dangan. The events are scheduled for Saturday, June 7th, starting at 10 am.
