Galway Becomes the Epicenter of Irish Judo as 200+ Athletes Prepare for Connacht Championships and Mini Mon

The mats are ready and the stage is set as Galway prepares to host one of the most significant events in the Irish Judo calendar: the Connacht Closed Championships and the Connacht Mini Mon Competition.

Taking place on Saturday, February 14th, 2026, this dual event will see over 200 competitors descend on the city, showcasing the immense growth and vibrant community spirit of the sport in the West of Ireland.

A Festival of Sport for All Ages

The day is uniquely designed to cater to the full spectrum of the judo community. The Mini Mon competition—specifically designed for younger "mon" grade judoka—focuses on participation, fun, and development in a supportive environment. For many of these young athletes, it is their first step toward competitive excellence.

  • Weigh-in: 09:00 AM – 09:30 AM
  • Minimon & Junior Start: 10:00 AM
  • Senior Championships: Following the youth events (estimated midday)

Galway’s Powerhouse of Participation

Galway currently boasts an incredible ten active judo clubs, more than any other county outside of Dublin. This dense concentration of talent has created a wide catchment area that spans from the city center to the furthest reaches of the county.

Cross-Community Impact

Beyond the medals, this event highlights the power of judo as a tool for cross-community participation. The sport brings together athletes from diverse backgrounds, ages, and neighborhoods, fostering a culture of mutual respect (Jita Kyoei) that is central to the judo philosophy.

"With 200+ athletes expected, this isn't just a tournament; it’s a celebration of the unique judo culture we’ve built in Galway," said a representative of the Connacht Judo Council. "Seeing the young kids in the Minimon share the mats with our seasoned senior champions shows exactly why this sport is thriving."
