Galway have got their Connacht U20 Football Championship off to a winning start with a 3-10 to 1-11 win over Roscommon in Tuam Stadium this evening.
Having played against the wind in the first half, Galway led at half-time by 2-5 to 1-4.
Senior star Ciaran Mulhern led by example and he set up Maitiú Ó Domhnaill, who in turn picked out the rampaging Shay McGlinchey to slot home Galway’s first goal midway through the half. Galway struck again less than three minutes later as Ross Coen’s shot went over Patrick Gaynor’s head before Cian Mitchell applied the finishing touch.
Roscommon made a strong comeback in the second half to cut the gap to just a goal at 2-8 to 1-8, but Galway found a second wind as a quickfire 1-1, including Matthew Collins’ composed finish to the net, sealed a fine opening round win for Kevin Johnson's side.
