Galway United's hopes of escaping the relegation playoff place took a significant blow last night as they were defeated by Sligo Rovers 1-0 at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Cian Kavanagh's 54th-minute header was enough to give the Bit O'Red the three points and send the travelling fans wild as they moved three points above Galway, who sit in 9th. Despite a late onslaught from Galway and opportunities that fell to Dara McGuinness, Galway just couldn't find the goal. The best chance of the game came for United eight minutes from time when the ball fell to McGuinness in the box, who found himself one on one with Sergeant, but just couldn't knock it past him.
With five games left to play for both sides, Galway now face a must-win clash with Cork City on Friday night at Eamonn Deacy Park, while Sligo will face St.Patrick's Athletic at the Showgrounds.
