Sean Doggett from Athenry AC claimed his first National Senior 400m title at the National Indoor Arena on Sunday, taking gold in a super time of 47.33 seconds. In what was a battle to the line, Sean produced a thrilling come-from-behind performance to secure victory in a high-quality field. It was an exciting finish, with Fintan Dewhirst (Tír Chonaill) fighting hard all the way but just falling short in the closing metres.
Sean Doggett (Athenry A.C.) – 47.33
Fintan Dewhirst (Tír Chonaill A.C.) – 47.84
Hugo Magee (Crusaders A.C.) – 48.92
This victory marks Sean’s first National Senior title and further adds to what has already been a remarkable career. He is also the youngest Irish male athlete ever to compete at a major championship — a testament to his dedication, consistency, and hard work both on and off the track. There was further success for the Athenry club on the day, with Rian Collins securing a superb third-place finish in the Men’s 3000m C Final, adding another podium performance to an excellent championship for the club. That was one of three bronze medals won over the weekend by Galway athletes, along with Darragh Kelly (Craughwell) in the High Jump and Orlaith Mannion (South Galway) in the 60 metres Hurdles, while Silvers were won by Emma Moore (GCH) in the Women’s 800 metres, Darragh Fahy (Loughrea) in the Men’s triple Jump and West Coast AC in the men’s 4 x 400 metres Relay
