Historic Week Marks 100 Years Of Galway Football And The Start Of The Season.

Galway football kicked off its centenary season in style this past week, with a packed schedule of events both on and off the field capturing the passion and pride of the local football community.

The week began on Monday evening, when referees and the Galway Football Association held a hugely positive meeting to outline plans for the season ahead. The session set a collaborative tone for the months to come, highlighting the vital role referees will continue to play in the growth of the game across the county.

On Wednesday evening, attention turned to coaching with a well-attended Football Forum focused on practical techniques for grassroots development. On-field demonstrations were delivered by Galway United players Sean Kimberley and Captain Conor McCormack, followed by an interactive Q&A in the newly refurbished Galway FA meeting room. Proceedings were guided by GFA Head of Football Sean McGlynn, who shared his expertise and insights.

The busy week continued on Saturday morning, when a new Referee Beginners Course was held at Eamonn Deacy Park, led by FAI instructors Eddie Clancy and Thomas Joyce . The course marked another important step in ensuring the next generation of referees are ready to support the game at all levels.

Competitive football returned on Friday night with the resumption of the Junior Premier League, followed by further fixtures at U18 and junior level over the weekend.

History was also made with the staging of the first-ever Over 35 Finals at Eamonn Deacy Park, which drew record-breaking crowds on both Tuesday and Saturday nights. West United emerged victorious over Athenry in one final, while Colemanstown overcame Kiltullagh to claim the Premier title. While silverware was at stake, the real triumph was the sense of community, family atmosphere, and celebration of the game that defined both occasions.

Looking ahead, the even age group leagues are set to commence next weekend, followed by the odd age group leagues the week after. Meanwhile, external entries are now open for the SFAI and Connacht competitions, which are due to begin in the coming weeks.

With the centenary season now underway, the football atmosphere in Galway is stronger than ever — and continues to grow with each passing day.
