Galway's Pearse Stadium played host to prospect and hometown hero Kieran Molloy as he came face to face with former British welterweight champion Kaisee Benjamin, the man who intends to derail him when they clash for the WBA European Welterweight Championship in this stadium on Saturday, June 28th.
Kieran Molloy (11-0, 6 KO's) WBA European Championship Challenger
"I've always wanted to bring big time boxing to Galway and I'm delighted to be fighting for my first belt at Pearse Stadium. There are so many people around here who have supported me since the very earliest amateur days and I am very proud to bring an event of this magnitude to their doorstep now."
"I've got a live opponent in Kaisee Benjamin - he's coming to win, he's the former British champion and he wants to get back to the big-time by using me as a stepping-stone. This is my homecoming but he's here to spoil the party and he's got a new baby to provide a future for, so he's going to be very dangerous. I think we're going to put on a great fight on June 28th."
Kaisee Benjamin (18-4-1, 6 KO's) Former British Welterweight Champion:
"I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking to put on a good show, because I've got people like Kieran thinking that I've fallen off the top level and they can beat me. Well that isn't the case, so I'm gonna come out and show everyone that on June 28th. I love fighting, I love putting on a show and I love entertaining fans. So, yeah, I can't wait to go into the lion's den."
Izzy Asif, GBM Sports Promoter and CEO
"This is a huge fight for Kieran Molloy and for Kaisee Benjamin, as well as for the Irish boxing scene as a whole. Kieran is looking to win this European championship and cement his position as a world title contender, but Kaisee sees a chance here to get back into the contender picture himself, so this is really going to be a war. I think you're going to see both boxers going all-out."
"Winning this European title gives you the ranking and the stature to be included in the world title picture. Kieran is taking a big step up in opposition here, lot of pressure and he's on home soil, but he's ready to show everyone that he's built for tests like these."
"This event is historic. Pearse Stadium has never hosted a boxing event before so I said why not? Let's do it outdoors in the summer, big homecoming for Kieran Molloy, the whole county behind him as well as boxing fans across Ireland. I've always said Irish fans are some of the most passionate boxing fans in the world. They know the sport, they know what a good fighter is. I think it's going to be an amazing atmosphere."
GBM: Molloy vs Benjamin takes place Saturday, June 28th at Pearse Stadium, Galway and features Brad Rea vs Shakan Pitters in the chief support bout as they contest the EBU Light-Heavyweight Championship.
