It was disappointment for Galway in their National Football League opener against Mayo in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Galway trailed by six points at the break, 1-12 to 0-9 with veteran Aidan O'Shea hitting the net.
Darragh Beirne seemed to have ended the game as a contest in the 3rd quarter when his goal put Mayo 2-15 to 0-11 to the good. Shane McGrath's goal on 56 minutes brought the Tribesmen right back into it, but Mayo substitute Cian McHale hit one back at the other end shortly after. Galway wouldn't go down without a fight, Fionn McDonagh with a second goal to take them right back into it, but it was as close as Padraig Joyce's side got, losing out by 3-18 to 2-18 in the end.
Galway will be away to Armagh next Saturday evening at 5 pm.
