Galway United suffered cup quarter-final heartbreak against St. Patrick's Athletic yesterday evening at Richmond Park as they fell to a 3-1 defeat after extra time.
It looked like the home side had snatched victory when Jake Mulraney drove a low shot past Brendan Clarke in the 83rd minute. But United got the draw their performance so richly deserved in the dying moments when David Hurley's shot deflected into the Pats' net and forced extra time.
The pivotal moment came just before the break in extra time when Killian Brouder was sent off after he took out Mason Melia on the edge of the box. When Chris Forrester netted from the resulting free kick, United were always going to have a mountain to climb. St. Pat's finished off John Caulfield's side's challenge as Jordan Garrick sealed the win for the Saints five minutes from time. Defeat marks the end of the road in the cup for United, as focus turns to retaining Premier Division status. They face a rematch with Pat's in the league on Friday night.
The draw for the cup semi-finals was made last night. Pat's will travel to Turner's Cross to face Cork City, while Kerry FC have been handed a novel tie in their first-ever cup semi-final as they will go to Tallaght to take on Shamrock Rovers.
