Tribesmen Rowing Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in style this St Patrick’s weekend by hosting one of Ireland’s premier rowing events.
On Saturday, 14 March, the River Corrib will welcome over 1,200 competitors for the annual Tribesmen Head of the River (THOR) — a demanding 4km time trial that starts at the lake and finishes just before Quincentennial Bridge.
Men and women of all ages will compete in eights, fours and quad sculls, with several high-quality matchups expected. More than 100 international athletes and supporters are travelling to Galway, ensuring strong competition for domestic crews.
THOR traditionally marks the close of the winter head-racing season before crews transition to sprint and Olympic regatta racing through the summer. International entries from Boston (USA), London, Prague and Lyon underline the event’s unique place in the Irish rowing calendar.
The event would not be possible without the generous support of its sponsors and partners. Tribesmen Rowing Club extends sincere thanks to Galway City Council for its valued support, along with all commercial sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, safety teams and community partners who contribute to the safe and successful delivery of the event each year.
Speaking ahead of the race, Regatta Chairman Patrick Boyle said:
“The Head of the River is a highlight of the sporting calendar in Galway. We are immensely proud to celebrate our 50th anniversary by welcoming crews from across Ireland and overseas to compete on the Corrib. We are especially grateful to Galway City Council and all our sponsors for their continued support, which ensures the event remains safe, competitive and internationally recognised.”
Regatta Secretary, Deirdre Larkin, said: “We would also like to acknowledge the support of all the rowing clubs in Galway - without their support, we could not run the event.”
The Tribesmen Head of the River generates significant economic benefit for Galway, bringing athletes, families and supporters to the city and supporting accommodation, hospitality and local services.
A new perpetual trophy will be awarded this year to the fastest Women’s Masters crew.
The prize is sponsored by the Tribesmen Masters women’s panel — four of whom won gold medals at last year’s World Championships in Banyoles, an extraordinary achievement given they only took up rowing within the past five years.
Spectators are encouraged to watch the racing from Dangan Slip when races take place at 11am and 3pm.
