Tuam Stars Camogie to make history this weekend
History will be made in Tuam this weekend as Tuam Camogie proudly announces that it has now fully amalgamated with Tuam Stars GAA Club. After a year‑long negotiation process built on cooperation, community spirit, and a shared vision for the future, they are delighted to officially call ourselves: Tuam Stars Camogie. This is in line with the Steering Group on Integration, chaired by former Irish president Mary McAleese, who are dedicated to merging the GAA, Camogie Association and Ladies GAA into one unified governing body. The goal of this project, often discussed under the “One Club” model, is to create a single inclusive association for all Gaelic games, with a target of full integration by 2027. The unification marks a significant and progressive moment for Gaelic games in the community, strengthening the future of the clubs and reinforcing a commitment of equality across all teams. For decades, both clubs have played a central role in sporting life in Tuam and the surrounding areas, nurturing talent and fostering pride. By coming together under the “One Club Model” they are creating an inclusive model that will benefit players of all ages. Shared facilities and resources will ensure greater collaboration and equal opportunity, sending a clear message that every player is valued and supported.
Derek Hayes, Chairperson of the former Tuam Camogie club and now Chairperson of Tuam Stars Camogie, described the move as transformational. “This is absolutely brilliant — we are delighted. It shows what can be achieved when people work together with a shared vision. This step secures the future of camogie in Tuam and surrounding parishes, guarantees our girls the same platform and support within one strong club structure.”
Paul Collins, Chairperson of Tuam Stars, said the day represents a proud milestone. “Did we ever think we would see this happen? It is fantastic. This is about one club, one community. Bringing everyone together under the Tuam Stars name strengthens us both on and off the pitch and reflects the unity we want to see in our town.”
Adding further significance to the occasion is U16 manager Neville Garvey, who will manage the first Tuam Stars camogie team to take to the field. "Tuam Stars as a club has changed so much from my days playing back in the 80's and 90's. When I was togging out in the old Tuam Stars complex, then heading up the Dublin road to play a match, little did I know that years later the girls of Tuam camogie, including my two daughters, would now be togging out in the terrific new facilities in preparation for representing Tuam Stars in an u16 camogie championship match. "
The first Tuam Stars Camogie team will take to the field under the “one club model” for the first time at U16 level on Sunday next, March 15th, in an away match against Kinvara.
