Motorists are being urged to avoid the N84 at Carrowbrowne this evening as emergency crews remain at the site of the Barna Waste fire

Emergency services are continuing to monitor the significant fire18 hours after it was first reported

Gardaí have traffic management in place and motorists are asked to avoid the N84 Headford Road at Carrowbrowne this evening if possible, while fire crews continue to work.

The fire services were notified of the fire at 11:30 last night, and two warehouses have been affected.

Units from across the county attended, including the city, Loughrea, Athenry, Carraroe and Tuam.

Speaking earlier Chief Fire Officer Gerry O'Malley said they managed to stop the fire from spreading from the two warehouses

In a statement to Galway Bay fm Barna Waste says while the fire remains a challenging situation, they are continuing to provide waste collection services to both their commercial and household customers.

However, the Carrowbrowne waste depot is closed to the customers until further notice.
