Connemara Councillor Tom Welby is calling for a study to improve safety of school yards, along with exploring their potential as flood relief areas.
The Independent Councillor says too many of our local school yards have hard surfaces, which aren't suitable for free play.
He also makes the point that so many areas are prone to flooding, and school yards could be dug up to install underground tanks to hold floodwater.
Cllr Welby feels the play surfaces could then be replaced with grass, providing a safer space for children to play.
Tom Welby, who's running as an Independent in the upcoming by-election, says this dual-use of play spaces would be very beneficial.
