By-election candidate and Mayor of Galway Mike Cubbard is calling for a light rail system and a greenway to be included in the Galway Ring Road project.
He says it should be treated as a once in a generation opportunity to build multi-modal infrastructure, rather than just a road project alone.
Independent Councillor Cubbard says a light rail corridor and continuous greenway network along the Ring Road would form a joined-up 'transport spine' running East to West.
He argues that no traffic congestion in any European city was solved by extra car lanes alone - and now is the time to get this project right.
Mayor Cubbard concludes that the state has the financial capacity to make this a long-term infrastructure investment rather than incremental fixes.
