Planning permission has been granted for a major heating energy centre beside Galway Crystal that would provide low-carbon heating to homes in the area.
The project, led by HeatGrid Ireland Limited, would see an existing building on the premises at Dublin Road demolished.
This district heating energy center on the left hand side of Galway Crystal from the road would have a total capacity of 45MW.
A core aspect of the plans is a heating network pipeline almost 8 thousand metres long, to service thousands of homes in the local area.
In a submission, local councillor Terry O' Flaherty termed this a massive undertaking that would lead to roads in the area being dug up for months on end.
She accepted a certain amount of traffic disruption would be unavoidable, but urged that every measure possible be taken to minimise the impact.
City planners have now approved the project with 15 routine conditions attached.
