Salthill and Silver Strand beaches are not affected, and remain open.

The ban on Grattan Road beach was imposed by the City Council on Tuesday as a result of heavy rainfall over the weekend and a leak from Mutton Island sewage treatment plant.

The rainfall along with two overflow incidents at Mutton Island Plant and high tides, led the council to enact a precautionary bathing ban on the adjacent beach.

Results received this morning from sampling taken on Tuesday for Ballyloughane and Grattan Beaches indicate that both beaches should now be closed.

Sampling was carried out again yesterday, and while the preliminary results indicate some improvement in water quality the final results are not expected until tomorrow.

As a result, the council says the warning notices remain in effect until further notice.
