City councillor urges Taoiseach not to travel to US for St. Patrick's Day

Galway Bay fm newsroom - City councillor Alan Cheevers has written to the Taoiseach stating he feels it would not be appropriate for Micháel Martin to accept the invitation to travel to the White House this St Patrick’s Day, In light of current restrictions and the volume of virus cases.

The City East Fianna Fail councillor has proposed the Taoiseach is represented by someone who may be already in the United States.

He has suggested Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan who is currently in the US as part of a cancer treatment trial and whom he describes as 'a woman of tremendous courage who would be a fantastic ambassador to represent our country'.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Minister believes the Taoiseach should travel to Washington for St Patrick's Day.

Simon Coveney says he believes it can be managed in a safe way.
