Connemara Councillors clash over mixed experiences with Electric Skyline

Councillors in Connemara have clashed over their opposing views on the service provided by Electric Skyline.

The company is contracted by Galway County Council to deal with public lighting faults throughout the county.

While some councillors have spoken out negatively about the company, some others - along with the County Council Director of Services - have spoke in favour of them.

Electric Skyline came under fire at last week's Loughrea area meeting, and the company was brought up again at the more recent Connemara Municipal District meeting.

Fine Gael Loughrea Councillor Jimmy McClearn had called for the local authority to revoke its contract with Electric Skyline, over long delays to some repairs.

In response, Electric Skyline said some repairs may take longer than the standard 10-day timeframe due to factors beyond its control, and says it notifies the local authority when this happens.

The issue has been raised once again - this time at County Hall and by Connemara Independent Councillor Tom Welby.

Councillor Welby says he has come across several issues regarding public lighting repairs:

However, following Councillor Welby's comments in the chamber, Independent Ireland Councillor Noel Thomas spoke in strong defence of Electric Skyline.

The local authority has said it will seek a report from Electric Skyline, and invite them to a workshop to address the concerns raised by councillors.
