Galway county councillors call on government to reject Mercosur trade deal

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway county councillors have called on the government to reject the Mercosur trade deal and to lobby other EU states to do likewise.

The deal involving Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay paves the way for a significant increase of imports of cheaper beef and other goods from South America.

The IFA estimates the potential impact on Irish farmers could be a loss in the region of between €500 and €750m.

Loughrea Fianna Fail councillor Shane Curley raised the motion at this week's meeting in county hall and said the move is a major concern across the west.
