Galway has more than 650 registered charities

There are now more than 650 registered charities in Galway.

The 2025 Annual Report from the Charities Regulator shows that's third nationwide, behind 1,182 in Cork and 3,097 in Dublin.

The report also found there were almost 700 complaints raised nationwide last year - an increase of almost 40 percent on 2024.

They include concerns about 'boss dominance' - where a CEO, chair or founder was reported to have exercised excessive control over the charity.

Overall, 11,500 charities were registered in Ireland last year.

Regulator Chief Executive Madeleine Delaney says people have to think carefully before setting up one:
