Galway Roscommon TD warns elderly being forced to leave homes vacant under Fair Deal Scheme rules

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway-Roscommon TD is warning that whole streets could be left derelict across the country because of an issue affecting the Fair Deal scheme.

Under the scheme, those in nursing homes make a contribution to the cost of their care based on their means.

However, Deputy Denis Naughten says the elderly are being discouraged from renting out their homes - because they're afraid it will affect their means test.

He claims this is because they are facing 'triple penalties' if the properties are used to provide badly-needed accommodation for homeless families.

Deputy Naughten says they're being hit for the value of their home, the rent it could raise, and any money deposited in their account.
