Galway study reveals scale of ocean plastic pollution

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A study by Galway marine scientists has revealed that 73% of fish in the North West Atlantic ocean have eaten plastics.

The PLASTOX research has been carried out by a team of NUI Galway scientists who participated in a transatlantic crossing on the Celtic Explorer.

Fish at depths of up to 600 metres were tested, and almost three quarters were shown to have ingested microplastic particles.

The research has been published today in the international peer-reviewed journal, 'Frontiers in Marine Science.'
