Galway survey reveals most shoppers visiting city using active travel or sustainable transport

A new survey has revealed that the majority of shoppers visiting Galway city are getting there by active travel or sustainable transport.

40 percent of people reported travelling by bus, 30 percent by car, 23 percent by walking or cycling and four percent by train.

The National Transport Authority have revealed the results from its City Shopper Surveys for Galway and Waterford.

The survey, carried out in 2025, shows that shopping remains the main reason for visiting Galway city centre.

11 percent of visitors to Galway city said food or drink was their main reason for visiting.

605 interviews were carried out at Eyre Square, High Street, Shop Street and Quay Street during the month of September 2025

In Galway city centre, sustainable transport users accounted for 49 percent of total estimated spend, compared with 47 percent by car users.

Meanwhile, the average intended spend in Galway was €51, with just over two in five visitors planning to spend more than €50.
