Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Galway TD is appealing to the public to heed water saftey advice on what is World Drowning Prevention Day.

Junior Minister for Transport Hildegarde Naughton is joining the Irish Coastguard in asking people to stay safe on the water.

Statistics show 80 per cent of drowning's happen within the home county of the victim.

Deputy Naugthon is asking the public to 'Do One Thing'- such as learn one water saftey skill or share one piece of water saftey advice.

On World Drowning Prevention Day she has this advice for swimmers:
