Government urged to improve flood defences immediately

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A local TD is calling on the Government to prioritise flood defence works to safeguard Ireland from the effects of climate change.

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Works and Roscommon/Galway deputy Eugene Murphy is asking the Government to give the green light for work to begin in flooding black spots.

A recent European-wide study shows the Ireland will be severely hit by flooding as a result of climate change in the coming years.

Nearly 300 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Athenry in August, up from just 125 millimetres for the same period last year.

Deputy Murphy says people who live near flooding black spots want sustainable measures to be put in place.
