Health Minister says hospital discharge failures in Galway and Cork 'not good enough'

The Health Minister has said the hospital 'discharge failures in Galway and Cork are not good enough'.

She made the comments in an interview with the Irish Independent.

UHG has been dealing with extremely high trolley figures recently, with 81 patients awaiting a bed just two days ago.

According to the Irish Independent, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said she is 'not happy that there are too many people on trolleys in Cork and in Galway'.

She says this is in contrast to the Mater Hospital and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where she says people are 'just as sick with flu but where their performance and management of flow of patients and discharging is considerably better'.

Health Minister MacNeill told the paper 'The discharge failures in Galway and Cork are not good enough, and that "Everywhere has a local nuance but also has a responsibility to plan'

In response, the HSE West and North West said in a statement - 'University Hospital Galway is currently challenged with bed capacity, delayed discharges and high numbers of patients being treated for flu and RSV.

It added 'However, we are doing everything we can to optimise the flow of patients.'
