MEP Luke 'Ming' Flanagan has thrown Galway West TD Catherine Connolly's name in the ring for EU Commissioner.

The Government is expected to nominate Phil Hogan's replacement as soon as this weekend.

The Government must nominated both a male and female candidate, while the decision will be made by the European Commission President.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney is understood to be the firm favourite to step into the role.

However, Midlands North-West MEP Luke 'Ming' Flanagan believes there are other strong candidates, including Leas Ceann Comhairle Catherine Connolly.
