Oughterard and Ballygar schools take highest honours in Council's Anti-Litter poster competition

The overall winners of Galway County Council's Anti-Litter poster competition come from schools in Oughterard and Ballygar.

The winner for primary schools was Zosia Wojdala from Scoil Chuimín agus Caitríona, Oughterard while the secondary schools winner was Liliana Staniak from Coláiste Mhuire, Ballygar.

Over 1,500 Galway students took part in the competition which aims to include young people in the battle against climate change and 55 winners were chosen.

The students were asked to design a poster to address one of the main littering problems.

In the special categories, Molly Finn of Kiltartan NS won the Stop Littering our Towns and Villages award, Patrick Canavan of Claddaghduff NS won the Roadside Litter category, Kateryna Rudenko of Scoil Chuimín agus Caitríona Uachtar Árd won the Beach Litter category, Wiktoria Ozga of Coláiste Mhuire in the city won the Cigarette-Related Litter category, Maeve Walsh of High Cross College Tuam won the Dog Fouling category and Rosaleen Dinneen of Coláiste Ghobnait in Inis Oírr won the 'Bin your gum when you're done' category.

The awards were presented by County Cathaoirleach David Collins at a ceremony at County Hall.
