A total of 1,430 instances of thefts from Galway shops occured from January to March of this year.
That's according to data from the Central Statistics Office, which found that the numbers for Galway are the highest in the West.
In total, there were almost 34 thousand thefts in the first quarter of the year, with 14,906 of those coming from Dublin.
Analysis of these figures by Stalwart Security found that retail crime costs Irish businesses an estimated €4.4 million every day.
