Over 200 fireworks offences in Galway since 2004

Gardaí recorded more than 200 firework offences in Galway over the past 20 years, which is the sixth highest figure in the country.

Almost all fireworks are illegal to sell or possess in Ireland without a license.

The only exceptions are those categorised as F1 - like party poppers, sparklers and ground spinners.

Everything else is illegal, and those caught could be arrested, and face fines or even prison sentences in some cases.

Since 2004, when laws on fireworks were tightened, there's been more than 4 thousand offences recorded nationwide by Gardaí.

Topping the national tables is Limerick with 336 offences, followed by Dublin West at 278 and Donegal at 263.

Galway is sixth, with 203 offences recorded over the last 20 years.

And well clear at the bottom of the table is Cork West - with the particularly low figure of just 24.

The figures were compiled by Energy Efficiency Ireland, who say fireworks can affect air and water quality, cause land pollution, and harm the wellbeing of animals.
