After leaving a rap gig in Dublin city over the weekend, Qayyum Balogun was attacked by what was described as a 14-man pack allegedly led by Joshua Brodericks.
Garda Will McCarthy described what followed as a completely unprovoked attack by a group that showed a staggering propensity for violence.
Mr Balogun was surrounded and set upon by six people. The 21-year-old was stabbed, and while he managed to escape, he collapsed a short distance away and died from his injuries.
Mr Brodericks is not accused of assaulting Mr Balogun.
He appeared in court today accused of assault causing harm to two other people.
