Taoiseach and Uachtarán Fianna Fáil, Micheál Martin TD has expressed his condolences following the death of former Senator, Professor James Doolan.
From Kingston, Professor Doolan was a retired professor at the University of Galway, was elected to the Administrative Panel of the 14th Seanad at a by-election in April 1980, following the election of Liam Burke to the Dáil.
He served Seanad Eireann in 1980 and 81 and is survived by his wife Caroline, his sister Lelia, his brothers Patrick and Matt and extended family and friends.
Speaking yesterday, the Taoiseach said that he was very sorry to learn of the death of his friend and former senator adding that Jim was a wise and astute observer of politics and a regular attender at party events and Ard Fheiseanna.
The Taoiseach said that Jim was an intelligent and erudite man, a retired professor from NUIG, who made a significant contribution to the academic community.
The funeral of Professor Doolan will take place tomorrow evening and Tuesday.
