A trial in apartment blocks in Galway and Limerick has found simple "nudges" can increase food waste recycling.
A study of 600 apartments resulted in a 143 per cent increase in food waste collected.
The EPA research involved giving residents a 10-litre bin, an educational leaflet and a supply of compostable liners.
It led to 1 point 93 kilogrammes of food waste being collected per apartment per week.
Tad Kirakowski, CEO of Voice Ireland, says leftover food is a big problem in apartment complexes.
