The Defence Minister has said that there is 'merit' in the proposal for a Naval base in Galway.
In response to a parliamentary question from Galway West TD John Connolly, Minister Helen McAntee clarified that no decision has been made yet.
This comes as the commission for Defence Forces has advised the government to increase its defence expenditure.
Locations such as Ros A Mhíl harbour have been suggested as a site for a base in the West of Ireland.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Fianna Fáil Deputy Connolly believes that Galway is 'under consideration' by the minister as a potential location.
