Public drinking banned in Tuam from today

Public drinking is banned in Tuam from today, July 7th.

Tuam is the first district in County Galway to approve laws banning the public consumption of alcohol.

There are alcohol bye-laws in Galway City but there's never been such rules in Co. Galway before.

This approach in Tuam follows growing concern around public drinking, anti-social behavior, and impact on public and community spaces.

From today, you can now be fined for drinking in public, or even possessing alcohol with an intention to drink it.

It's not a blanket ban - you can of course still enjoy a pint outside a licensed bar, and exemptions will apply for some approved festivals and public events.

But from today, drinking alcohol in public anywhere in Tuam will earn you a fine of €75 if you're spotted by Gardaí or a community warden.

That'll double if not paid within a few weeks - and after that, it's a trip to court and a heavier fine.

Galway County Council says it'll work to ensure the bye-laws are implemented effectively - and it's committed to supporting safe and accessible public spaces for residents and visitors.
