Over a thousand signatures on petition to reverse watersports ban on Silverstrand Beach

More than a thousand signatures have been gathered on a petition calling for the reversal of a watersports ban at Silverstrand Beach.

Signs appeared at the Barna beach last summer, and upon raising the issue at City Hall, councillors were told it was just an advisory, rather than outright prohibiting the activities.

Management at the time said the move is necessary to fulfill the criteria to maintain Silverstrand's Blue Flag status.

The online petition says the ban on activities like kitesurfing and paddle boarding has led to confusion and concern among regular users of the beach, often causing conflict.

It says local water sports groups have met with City Council management four times, with no resolution being found.

The petition calls on the local authority to implement the motions, remove the signs and to Zone Silverstrand beach for non-motorised watercraft.

It's asking for members of the public, elected representatives and by-election candidates to support the petition, to ensure the beach is zoned before the beginning of the 2026 bathing season.
