President Catherine Connolly is to be awarded the Freedom of Galway City.
At City Hall last night, Councillors took just a few minutes behind closed doors to conclude she was the most deserving recipient this year.
President Connolly was elected to Galway City Council in 1999, and then served Galway West in the Dáil from 2016 until she was elected President last year.
She'll now be bestowed with the Freedom of Galway City on June 12th.
Previous recipients over the years include Eamon de Valera, Christy O' Connor, Ronald Reagan, Michael D. Higgins, Patricia Burke Brogan, Garry Hynes, Ena McEntee and Keith Finnegan.
