Posters up as Galway West by-election voting date set

Candidate posters are up throughout Galway as the date has been set for the upcoming by-election.

The Galway West and Dublin Central by-elections will be held on Friday May 22nd.

Minister for Housing and Local Government James Browne will later sign the election order, after the writs were moved in the Dáil last night.

14 people have expressed their intention to compete in the race to fill the seat left vacant by now President Catherine Connolly.

The deadline for candidate nominations closes at midday on May 1st, while the deadline to register to vote is Tuesday May 5th.

The candidates to confirm their intention to run so far (as of April 23rd) are:

Niall Murphy - The Green Party

Connemara South Councillor Noel Thomas - Independent Ireland

Connemara North Councillor Tom Welby - Independent

City East Councillor Helen Ogbu - Labour Party

Míde Nic Fhionnlaoich - Social Democrats

Orla Nugent - Aontú

Denman Rooke - People Before Profit

Mark Lohan - Sinn Féin

City Central Councillor Mike Cubbard - Independent

Oranmore-based councillor Cillian Keane - Fianna Fáil

Leader of  Irish People's Party AJ Cahill - Irish People's Party

Michael Ryan (law graduate) - Independent
